District of Hope

Hope, surrounded by the snowcapped Cascade Mountains, is the physical eastern gateway to the Fraser Valley about 150 kilometers east of Vancouver. All roads from the rest of BC and Canada must go through Hope to get to the coast. It is here that the mighty Fraser River makes the transition from the Fraser Canyon to the Fraser Valley. Most of the economic activity in this community is based on the wood/logging industry or on servicing the needs of travellers, tourists and commercial drivers that make up the vehicular traffic going through this area. As well, Hope is central to a large number of recreational areas and attractions to be found at this end of the valley.

Hope was first incorporated as a Village in 1929 and as a Town in 1965. In 1992, the District of Hope was created when the Town of Hope amalgamated with Kawkawa Lake, Silver Creek/Flood and Lake of the Woods areas. It has a population of approximately 7000.

Fort Hope was founded in 1848 by the Hudson's Bay Co. as a fur brigade outpost and participated in the Gold Rush of 1858. In June of 1858 the first steamboat, the "Surprise" landed at Hope. In 1914, the C.P.R. built a spur line over the Fraser River into Hope, through the Coquihalla Canyon and into the southern interior of B.C. This spur was named the Kettle Valley Railway. The Hope-Princeton highway was constructed between 1945 and 1949 and was a catalyst that increased economic activity in and around Hope.
