It all started in 1827 when Fort Langley was built at Derby Reach as a Hudson's Bay trading post. This became the first permanent European settlement in the Fraser Valley. A few years later the HBC developed some land to the east to provide crops and dairy products. In 1839 the Fort was relocated to this location. Fort Langley was the location at which the Colony of British Columbia was proclaimed by Governor Douglas in 1858 as a response to the influx of American miners on their way to the Fraser goldfields. The Township of Langley was incorporated in 1873. The fact that this area has the least amount of elevation change made it attractive for farming of all kinds of crops and the raising of different types of livestock, still true today.
William and Adam Innes were the first European settlers at a location which came to be known as "Innes Corners", and later as "Langley Prairie". In 1955 the City of Langley was incorporated as a separate municipality.
The two Langleys have a combined population of over 100,000, with dramatic growth occurring in both the population and economic base. Proximity to major transportation corridors leading to Vancouver, the US or point east make this an attractive location for residential and business purposes. Several distinct communities make up this area (Fort Langley, Aldergrove, Murrayville, Walnut Grove and Willowbrook as well as the City of Langley).
Over the years Langley has become the "horse capital of BC". Wineries, nurseries, golf courses, parks, residential subdivisions dot the landscape taking advantage of the rolling farmland and woodlands crisscrossed by winding country roads. A extensive mix of cultural, historical and recreational events provide many reasons to visit this western edge of the Fraser Valley.
