There is a diverse economic base to Maple Ridge. A large population supports many personal shopping and service outlets. Agriculture, wood/logging, light industry and recreational opportunities provide a wide array of business activity. It has a ferry link across the Fraser River at Albion connecting with Fort Langley on the south side within minutes drive of the Trans Canada Highway (#1). A bridge to replace the ferry is a hot topic of conversation in this area.
Maple Ridge takes pride in its calendar of cultural events whose diversity of content celebrates the many influences that have played a role in its development and the interests that its present population is involved in including people of all backgrounds and all ages.
The original European settlers, who arrived in 1858 were workers at Fort Langley (an HBC trading post across the Fraser River). Two of the original settlers were scots by the name of MacIvor and Robertson. Named after a ridge of maple trees on MacIvor's dairy farm, it was incorporated in 1874. Thomas Haney arrived in 1876 to start a brick factory. His name remains ubiquitous in the area.
