Farms with a variety of berry crops and many types of livestock dominate the landscape. Proximity to Greater Vancouver is generating an influx of residential developments with their related shopping and service outlets. Forest products and fishing contribute to the economic mix. There is also substantial use by residents from all of the Lower Mainland of the recreational options available in the area.
The original European settlers were workers at Fort Langley (an HBC trading post across the Fraser River). Named after William Pitt the younger (British Prime Minister during much of the Napoleonic Wars), it was incorporated in 1874. The Pitt name is referred to again in Pitt Lake and Pitt River.
